Freddie Roach Not Worried About Manny Pacquiao’s Delayed Training US CampPosted on
Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach is not worried about Manny Pacquiao’s postponement of his arrival in Los Angeles to train for his upcoming fourth showdown with Juan Manuel Marquez on December 8 in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao was supposed to start training at the Wild Card Gym with Roach this week before the former pound-for-pound king decided to move the date of his departure next week. But Roach isn’t worried at all, saying that they still have plenty of time to prepare.
In an interview with Rich Mazon of PhilBoxing.com, Roach said: “No big deal. He’ll be a couple days late but we have eight weeks before the fight, plenty of time.”
When asked about his fight plan against their Mexican nemesis, Roach said that they haven’t decided yet and he will wait for Pacquiao to discuss the plan together at the Wild Card Gym, but the veteran trainer has already lined-up sparring partners for Pacman.
Reigning NABF lightweight champion Ray Beltran, who is known for his superb counter-punching ability – a skill that is mastered by Marquez, will be one of the sparring partners of Pacquiao. Aside from Beltran, Roach also listed two Russian pugs, including junior welterweight campaigner Ruslan Provodnikov, who was Pacquiao’s primary sparring partner during his preparation for the Timothy Bradley bout.
Despite the late arrival of Pacquiao, Roach is confident that his prized fighter will be very committed to their training once he arrives in the USA and he also believes that they won’t have distractions like what they had in the third bout against Marquez.
Roach said: “We had a great camp last fight against Marquez and everything fell apart before the fight, distractions of course. Manny got rid of all that stuff in his life. It’s not going to happen this time.”
Roach even revealed that for the first time, Pacquiao promised him to score a knockout win.
“Manny understands that he needed that killer instinct back and that firepower,” revealed Roach. “And that people want to see knockouts and not decisions. So, Manny knows that and he promised me a knockout for the first time ever and I’m going to remind him that every day.”
